3RD TRIMESTER FOODS

I am 33 weeks pregnant today! What kind of foods are best in the last stretch of pregnancy?

What you eat during the last 3 months of pregnancy supports the continued development of your unborn baby, so it's essential that you choose nutrient dense foods that supply the vitamins and minerals your little one needs to grow .

Salmon 👉Your baby's brain develops at a rapid pace during the third trimester, and eating foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids supports that growth. Salmon is a top food source of docosahexaenoic acid, or DHA, a specific fatty acid that promotes the formation and development of your unborn baby's nervous system. Season a piece of fresh salmon with your favorite herbs and spices. Grill or broil the fish for a nutritious meal or shred the cooked fish and scatter it over a tossed green salad. Walnuts, flaxseed and trout are healthy sources of DHA as well
Eggs 👉Eggs contain choline, a nutrient that promotes proper functioning of cells, making it essential during the rapid growth your baby goes through during the third trimester. An article published in 2000 in the "Journal of the American College of Nutrition" notes that choline is often depleted during pregnancy but is critical for memory development that lasts throughout your baby's life. Adequate intake of choline might reduce your baby's risk of renal, pancreatic and growth disorders as well, reports a 2005 study published in the "American Journal of Clinical Nutrition." Have a hard-boiled egg for a snack or eat scrambled eggs as part of a healthy breakfast to help your baby get the choline she needs.
Protein foods 👉Your unborn baby requires adequate protein to support the growth and development of her tissues and muscles during the third trimester. Many foods that contain protein also supply iron and zinc. Iron can help prevent premature delivery and low birth weight, and zinc aids in the production of insulin and enzymes. Lean beef and pork, white meat poultry, fish and beans are nutritious sources of protein, iron and zinc. Have a piece of grilled beef or pork for dinner or add shredded turkey or chicken to soup or chili. Add beans to stew, pasta or tossed green salads to boost your intake of protein, iron and zinc.
Additional Foods 👉Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables during the third trimester of your pregnancy. They contain fiber, which can prevent constipation, a common complaint during this point in pregnancy. Fruits and vegetables supply vitamin C for your baby's immune system, vitamin A to support bone and tooth development and folate for proper DNA formation. Drink milk and eat low-fat cheese for a healthy dose of calcium, which promotes the formation of your baby's bones and teeth. Dairy foods supply B vitamins as well, which are essential for your baby's skin, nerves, digestive system and eyes.
